FAQ OF LASERS AND IPL

Q) How does hair removal by Laser/IPL work?
A) Permanent hair reduction can only be achieved by destruction of the hair roots, under the skin. The Laser or IPL (Intense pulsed light) beams are targeted to the hair roots, which contain melanin pigment. The pigment absorbs the energy and transfers it to the roots which get destroyed and are then unable to produce new hair. A layer of cooling gel may be sometimes used while doing a laser.

Q) Can I undergo permanent Hair reduction?
A) More hairy areas and Dark hair on a fair non tanned skin respond the best, barring grey and blonde hair almost anyone can undergo permanent laser hair reduction. If there are some hormonal problems then the response to treatment may be a little slower. The high tech machines have software that permits the doctor to set the energy differently for different skin types and different areas.

Q) How painful is it and how long does each session take?
A) Most patients do not need any numbing before the treatment. The sensation is usually described as heat or tingling by most patients. However if you are bothered by even minimal sensation then we can use numbing creams just before the treatment sessions. Treatment for the full face may take between 15 to 30 minutes and for arms and legs around 40 minutes each.

Q) How Safe is it and how many sessions are required?
A) The treatments are very safe no long term side effects are known. There may rarely be some pigment changes seen in darker patients.Repeat treatments are need because only the growing hair follicles can be destroyed and not the resting ones. Repeat sessions are needed as the resting follicles enter the growing phase. Repeat sessions may be done every 1-2 months sometimes even longer intervals for 3 to 8 sessions.

Q)Any special preparations/precautions required?
A)Nothing significant except that you should not bleach , wax or pluck your hair before a treatment session. Light shaving is done just before the treatment procedure or 1-2 days prior to treatment. After the treatment session sometimes some creams may be prescribed to take care of the irritation if any, also sunscreens should be used in the post treatment phase.

Q)Is it affordable?
A)The cost of getting a laser treatment has drastically come down now. And for this treatment, it is cheaper to get treatment done today, than to get regular waxing or any other hair removal method done life long.

SKIN REJUVENATION “Photofacial”

Q) How does Non-Ablative rejuvenation work?
A) This treatment acts by causing skin tightening, improvement of skin turnover. It also helps in reducing the open pores and improving the overall skin texture. It acts by delivering energy which penetrates deep into the skin layers and stimulates the cellular network of skin to grow.

Q) How often do I need the treatments?
A) Usually sessions are given at intervals of 3 weeks. The individual responses vary according to the type of skin. Approximately 4-6 sessions are required in theory for achieving an optimal clinical outcome.

Q) What precautions to take after skin rejuvenation?
A) A sunscreen is a must after the procedure. Also one should avoid use of glycolic /salicylic acid based products for use on the skin in the post treatment phase. Other detailed instructions are given with the prescription to avoid any adverse effects.

Q) What Adverse effects can occur? Is the treatment safe?
A) Since this is an absolutely Non-Ablative treatment the chances of adverse events are very low. There can be some brown/black crusting which may form for few days which fall off. Some redness may also be seen for a few hours to 1-2 days. Scarring and other side effects are very rare.

Q) Can it be combined with other treatments like peels and skin polishing?
A) Yes it can be combined with other treatments, but an appropriate gap is needed. Your doctor should decide weather you need other combined treatments also or not.

Q) Do I need the rejuvenation treatment?
A) Let your doctor decide which treatment you would need, if in your case the Laser/IPL Rejuvenation Treatment is not well or other treatments would work better for you, we will advice you the same, rather than misguiding you or selling you a “package”!!

CHEMICAL PEELS & MICRODERMABRASION

Q) What are chemical peels?
A) This is a procedure in which different medicines are applied by a trained doctor on the skin for short periods of time. The medicines are then neutralized/washed and you can resume your normal activites, but one has to avoid going out in the sun after a peel. It is a painless procedure. There many only be some burning and tingling sensation and sometimes some irritation of the skin for some time.

Q) how do the peels act?
A) Different peels have slightly different actions. In general they act by allowing the new skin to grow faster and stimulate the collagen and elastin (responsible for tightness of skin) to grow faster, they also have some antibiotic effects and some agents also decrease pigmentation/melasma.

Q) What chemicals are used and are they safe?
A) The medicines used are alpha hydroxy or fruit acids, e.g lactic acid used is present in milk, mandelic acid used is present in almonds, kojic acid used is present in mushrooms. They medicines now available are synthesized after extensive research and manufactured in European nations or the USA, under the most stringent quality control standards. Cheap substandard lab chemicals are no longer used. The proceure is very safe there are hardly any long term side effects (rare), however immediately post peel one may experience redness , irritation for some time. Black brown spotting may occur uncommonly and lasts 2 to 7 days before falling on its own.

Q) How long and how often we do the peel?
A) One session usually takes 10- 30 minutes, repeat sessions are required every 10-20 days depending on the problem and the medicine/medicines used. 6 to 8 such sessions may be need sometimes less sometimes more depending on the condition. The responses vary for each individual skin and you should begin to see some effects after the 3rd or 4th peels, therefore “selling packages” is not considered a wise option by most people.

Q) Is there a peel for me?
A) Peels are widely used for the treatment and management of pimples, oily skin, ageing skin , wrinkles, dullness of complexion, for removal of tanning, for wrinkles and pigmentation, and also for adding that “glow” to the complexion.

Q) Who should be doing the proceure and how to decide what to do when?
A) Your skin specialist or plastic surgeon is the best person to decide which peel you should undergo. The procedure should be done by trained personnel /qualified doctors with the requisite training in the procedure.

MICRODERMABRAISION “SKIN POLISHING”

Q) what is microdermabrasion? And how does it act?
A) This procedure is done using a modern machine in which very fine crystals of aluminium powder are sprayed on the skin and at the same time is sucked back into the machine along with the superficial/dead skin cells. In the process a fine stimulus is given to the skin to grow faster without using any medicines!!

Q) How safe is the procedure?
A) In trained hands the procedure is amongst the safest cosmetic procedures, but there may be some redness for 1 or 2 days, some flaking and dryness of skin may be seen especially in dry weather conditions. In thinner skins sometimes some streaks are visible for a few days.

Q) How long does it take and what are the precautions?
A) One session for the full face or upper back usually takes around 15 minutes and has to be repeated every 15 to 20 days for 6-8 sessions, being a cosmetic procedure some people like to keep coming fo maintanence sessions every month or so. One should avoid the sun few days after the treatment and apply sunscreens and moisturizers and other medicines adviced by the doctor. After the procedure you should also avoid procedures like waxing and bleaching of the affected areas for few days. Tell your doctor if you have psoriasis, herpes/cold sores of lips or a bad tendency of forming thick scars.

Q) Who should be doing it ? Are the skin polishing at parlours the same?
A) Any doctor trained in the procedure or a skin specialist should do it preferably. The polishing treatments widely “promoted, packaged and sold” by some parolurs may not be using the sterile tips and may not use a “desirable strength/suction” for fear of “side effects”, also the equipment used is usually different . For cost cutting a good crystal flow may not be used by some.

Q) Whom does the procedure help?
A) Almost anyone can undergo the procedure. People with active acne should avoid preferably till pimples settle down. It is used for acne scars, for it regenerative actions , as an adjuvant for fine wrinkles and dull complexion. Can be used for the face, arms and the back and almost any other area.

Q) Do I need to apply something after the procedure?
A) Sunscreens and some other creams may be prescribed by your doctor.
